5 Patios to Keep on Your Radar This Summer
I have to say, I’ve never been happier that I’m writing this episode. It’s been a long time coming and truthfully, I didn’t think COVID would ever allow us to get to this point. Today, we’re talking about the top 5 patios you need to keep on your radar this summer. We’re talking patio drinks and eats… a true heaven on Earth after everything we’ve been through. BUT, you know the drill…
Before we dive in, here are a few things you missed last week:
On Saturday, June 27th – Windsor Essex banned together to make history. The June 27th Miracle run by over 10 thousand volunteers made their way around Windsor-Essex County to collect non-perishable food items to donate to our local food banks. While no exact numbers have been received as of yet, I’ve seen pictures of our local arenas and I’m in aweh. It always makes me feel good when the community comes together.
Masks have become mandatory in all commercial spaces and suddenly… going to the grocery store makes me feel a little bit safer.
The Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association is planning street closures, extended patios and sidewalk sales now that Windsor-Essex is moving into phase two. The city will also permit any non-licensed establishments or retail businesses to use the sidewalk space in front of their locations for cafe-style seating or sidewalk-sale style tables.
On Sunday June 28th, there was a March for Migrant workers to show support for the workers who help keep our produce in store. After a ton of backlash from the community, this walk was an attempt to show solidarity for those workers and let them know they deserve better treatment than the treatment they are getting today.
Today we’re talking about the 5 patios you need to keep on your radar this summer.
The first patio I want to talk about is The GOAT Tap & Eatery, located in LaSalle and Lakeshore, mostly because when I drive by, I’m in aweh. Here in Lakeshore, they’ve compromised some of their parking spaces to add some picnic tables for additional seating to their already existing patio. They’ve added some hay bales for decoration while also ensuring there are umbrellas for those extra sunny days. Now, if you’ve never been to the GOAT Tap & Eatery before, you’re missing out. The G.O.A.T brings together the casual atmosphere of a sports bar with the creative menu of a gastro-pub.. Enjoy a family friendly sports venue offering food & drink with classic twists on popular bar food prepared fresh from their culinary team. Our menu selection doesn’t stop at delicious wings, burgers and sandwiches; but also features steak and seafood. With a contemporary décor surrounded by memorabilia from some of the Greatest Athletes Of All Time, the atmosphere encourages you to kick back, relax and enjoy a cold beer (or a glass of wine) and a delicious meal. The G.O.A.T is sure to impress all sports fans & foodies alike. They currently have a limited menu but it’s still 100% worth a shot.
The next patio I want to talk about is The Salty Dog. Located in beautiful downtown Amherstburg, this upscale pub hosts a refined menu with daily features. Their imported stone oven supplies mouth watering pizzas perfect for any occasion. Hang out on their patio and enjoy one of our many local (and not local) craft beer selection, a glass of wine or even a handmade cocktail. Their menu includes anything from arancini and bruschetta to sandwiches, lobster tacos, pizza and gnocchi. I think it’s safe to say that no matter what kind of food you like, you’ll find it at the Salty Dog.
The next patio is for you vegan and vegetarian food lovers - Carrots n Dates Tecumseh. Located at 1125 Lesperance Rd in Tecumseh, Carrots n’ Dates is a cozy cafe specializing in wholesome, gluten free and 100% plant based food made with the freshest and finest ingredients. All of their food is sourced local and GMO free when possible. They believe that food is an essential source for health, energy, happiness and well-being. The patio is now open and you can officially dine “in”.
For all of you beer lovers, I have not forgot about you – while there are a ton of patios open that can serve you cold brews, I’ve had my eye on Thompson House. At the Thompson House, they offer a good old British vibe right in the heart of Windsor. But more than that, they want to put the “house” back in public house. They believe that the Thompson House is your home just as much as it is ours - and by home… they mean tent… on their patio! Founded in 2015, the Thompson House pub seeks to amalgamate food, music, and spirit. This makes the TH a place of refuge and fun throughout the year. Located in the core of Olde Riverside, the Thompson House was constructed from scratch in 2014. Once the site of an old gas station, they worked with an interior designer and woodworker to make sure the vibe of historic England became etched into its walls. Needless to say, this house is your home and their patio is open for you to try all of their delicious food and bevvys.
Annnnd… the last patio on my list is for all of you fancy folk out there – we’re talking Vitos. If you’ve never gotten the chance to experience Vitos in Olde Walkerville… I sense a date night in the near future, whether with friends or a significant other. Vitos is home to some of the best pizza and pasta I’ve ever had… and of course the wine is great too. I’m no food critic though so you’ll definitely have to try this one out for yourselves. Their patio is now open and you can experience the true taste of Italy again. Save the handshakes and cheek smooches for another time though!
Annnnd… that is a wrap on this week’s episode of Only in YQG. I’m feeling like a patio (literally any patio and any ounce of socialization I can get) is in my near future. It’s been a long, yet surprisingly fast, few months and I think it’s safe to say, we never really realized how important socialization is to us as human beings.
With that being said, we’re not 100% in the clear so please be safe, wear masks when you can (and should – cough cough commercial establishments) and be kind to those around you. The kindness and respect we show our community members is part of what makes Windsor-Essex such an incredible place to live!
Until next week, keep being amazing Windsorites.
