Elephants, ‘Za, Brews… All for Pops!
Welcome to another week of fighting against racism, speaking out about important issues and watching the Windsor-Essex community slowly re-open.
Last week we launched our very first giveaway for Father’s day and I figured this would be a great opportunity to feature each of those businesses in this week’s episode. But before we do that, here are a few things you missed last week:
Doug Ford announced that we can finally start hugging our friends and family again (yay!) I know my mom will be so happy. He also mentioned that we can start hanging out with people in groups as big as 10… a true miracle since COVID began.
Ontario opened up for phase two with the exception of Toronto and Windsor…. Fun. Our restaurants and hair salons are not currently open but hopefully soon. I don’t know about you but box dye just isn’t gonna cut it and my partner looks like he’s got permanent bed head.
Kona Sushi has opened their second location in LaSalle on Malden Road. You really can’t miss em because they’ve got some incredible artwork on their building by Derks, an international mural artist based in Windsor!
Wizards of Walkerville’s Bad Witch Bakery has officially opened their doors on June 2nd. Located on Erie Street, Bad Witch Bakery is your go-to source for all things Freakshakes, Ice Cream Bowls and Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches, available all summer long.
Windsor hosted a driving protest for Black Lives Matter for those who wanted to participate but who are immunocompromised and can’t take risks with COVID! The turnout was a great success!
Okay so last week we launched our very first giveaway and it features five incredible businesses I’m going to share with you today.
I’m going to start with East Valley Pizza because to be honest, I haven’t been able to stop talking about them. Last week I popped into East Valley Pizza on Amy Croft in Tecumseh to pick up a giftcard. While I was waiting there, I decided to grab a pizza… because let’s be real… it’s always a good time for pizza. The second I looked at their menu and saw vegan cheese, my heart skipped a beat. It sucks being a lactose intolerant pizza lover. Now let me tell you… this pizza was one of THE BEST pizzas I have EVER eaten in my life. It sounds kind of dramatic but I’ve eaten a lot of pizza… I highly highly recommend you give it a try! Plus, Rina the owner is the absolute sweetest.
Now, let’s talk about Michael Difazio Reclaim Artistry who provided the custom made charcuterie board for our giveaway. Michael Difazio is a reclaim artist; he builds furniture and art pieces out of older materials that no longer serve the purpose they were originally built for. One of the shop's signature items is their kitchen tables – they build the tables, you build the memories. That’s their slogan! I’ve seen the team complete some really incredible projects including some made from bowling lane floors, barn doors, old windows etc. They are dedicated to building high quality custom furniture with a story behind all the materials. Every unique piece that leaves their shop is one-of-a-kind, with a history that is rich enough to share with all your guests. The team is focused on enhancing the imperfections of the materials they use instead of covering them up allowing each material to tell its individual story. The shop is located on Drouillard street and just popping into their location will give you a glimpse into their workshop. If you’re curious to know more, check them out on Youtube as well. They have a segment called the Elephant In the Room project where they take your most weird and abnormal junk and transform it into a product so unique it’ll have your guests sparking conversations about it. I’m telling you right now, the things Mike and his team make are out of this world. Give it a look.
There’s nothing better to pair with your charcuterie board than a couple of beers… especially for all of you dads out there! Luckily for you, Walkerville Brewery joined in on our giveaway which now gives me a chance to gloat about them even more! Walkerville Brewery, located on Argyle road, is a place of heritage, community and of course – great hand crafted beer. By handcrafting unique styles in small batches using quality malted barley, hops and pure water, they deliver fresh, flavourful beers to their customers. Offering a range of flagship beers, seasonal offerings and special edition one-off beer styles; there are always unique and interesting beers flowing from the tanks and taps of Walkerville Brewery. If you haven’t had their beers, you’re missing out!
Now, Hidden Trails Escape Rooms are an experience I have yet to try but I’m always down for puzzles, mystery and pretty much any chance I can get to be competitive. Hidden Trail Escape Rooms is here for all your puzzle-solving, clue-finding, escape game needs. Looking for something new to do in Windsor? Want some entertainment for the whole family? Looking for a scare? They’ve got you covered. Gather up a group and race against the clock as you solve your way through their uniquely designed puzzles and themed rooms. You’ll need to use your wits, teamwork and resourcefulness to escape. Are you up to the task? Hopefully they will be open soon, but for now… add this one to your #YQGBucketlist.
Lastly, I want to talk about Spoontastic Treats. If you missed last week’s episode, I dished out how I came to know of them and why you NEED them. From chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate covered pretzels to cake pops and cookies… I’m sure you’ll fall in love. Stare at their Instagram account long enough and you’ll start drooling too. I actually got to try Spoontastic Treats at the Downtown Windsor Farmer’s Market in 2018 and I’ve been in love ever since.
Annnnd that is a wrap on this week’s episode of Only in YQG! This is a friendly reminder that next Sunday is Father’s Day so don’t wait till the last minute to grab that father figure in your life something special. A lot of our local businesses have great options for you to choose from and you can usually order right online!
Until next week, keep your eyes on our page for our second giveaway, keep fighting the good fight and show your family and friends a little extra love!
