From Seedling to Store: A Local Look at Brandner Farms

What if tonight’s dinner could include fresh, organic produce grown in Windsor-Essex County soil? No pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, GMO’s or antibiotics. Just good ol’ fruits and veggies grown and sold locally?

Sounds like a dream right? Well, Brandner Farms is here to make that dream a reality.

Last month, we had the opportunity to visit Brandner Farms out in Ruthven, Ontario to see how Brian and Monica Brandner grow the produce that they sell in their Market Store on Walker Road. We expected to see lots of land for growing (and we did!) but we got to experience so much more.

In 2008, the Brandner family purchased 94 acres of land to follow in the family tradition of farming. Two generations ago, their grandparents immigrated to Canada, bringing along their knowledge of growing food organically, without the use of harmful chemicals. Brandner Farms Organics remains dedicated to that same organic, sustainable farming.

Our tour started in the greenhouse where we got to take a peek at all of the seedlings that were awaiting their turn to be planted. We were also greeted by the sweetest farm cat Mushu. Planting the seeds in the greenhouse allows Monica and her team the opportunity to start their farming in the colder months. If there’s anything we know about YQG, it’s that the colder months are… well, cold, and they don’t make for the nicest growing weather. With this greenhouse, they are able to start the growing season sooner.

Once things start to warm up, the team heads out to the field with the seedlings and plants them in their new homes. They use an irrigation system that pulls water from their wells to water the plants until they are full grown. Just one of the many eco-friendly practices Brandner Farms uses to grow their crops. It was such an incredible experience learning about organic farming and how they’ve built an ecosystem that essentially cares for itself.

PS – Did you know that Brandner Farms not only grows vegetables, they also grow fruits and berries, their farm consists of a wide variety of fruit trees – peaches, apples, plums, and pears. If you haven’t tried these oblong haskap berries, you must! They pack a punch when it comes to flavour and are super high in antioxidants!

Once the produce is ready to harvest, the team picks them and gets them ready to deliver to their Market Store.

The Market Store

Two and a half years ago, Monica and Brian opened up their store at 1390 Walker Road in Windsor, Ontario. The store started out selling organic produce, dairy, and meats but has quickly expanded to so much more, with the addition of homemade organic breads, pastries and ready made meals. When you walk into the store, you’re greeted by the friendly staff who not only cash you out but are the very hands that make all of the fresh baked goods and meals. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase Brandner's organic produce and treats as well as locally sourced organic grass fed and finished meat and dairy products, dry goods and more. There’s something here for the vegans, the gluten-free, the lactose-intolerant and those of you who have a sweet tooth (the tarts are to die for!).

We strongly encourage you to support your local farmers now and always. These farmers put their heart and soul into growing THE best produce so that you can feel good about the food you’re putting into your mouths. Brandner Farms passion is farming, but their devotion is to serving you, their customers. That is why they are committed to bringing you only the best and safest foods.

Do your next grocery shopping at Brandner Farms Organics Market Store and be sure to follow them on social media (Facebook & Instagram) to keep up with what specials they have in store. Don’t blame us for the mouth-watering content you’ll find on their page – it’s worth the watch AND worth the taste.
