I didn’t start learning about the local community of YQG until the past couple of years and I am so happy I have. Even before the pandemic hit, they were always supporting each other. They were always promoting each other’s work, purchasing from each other, and helping one another with their businesses. When covid came about, that support got even stronger. I was so amazed at how lovely and caring the local community is. This is why I am so happy to be a part of Only in YQG to help spread awareness of these awesome local makers and businesses so others can see the amazing things they do.
I am going to tell you about 7 local stores to check out online during lock down and also in store when the lock down is lifted as the shopping experience in each store is completely different and so you have to experience them all!
The first two I am going to mention are for those who are looking to make a better impact on our planet. Green Envy and Emerson Supply Co are two amazing stores with a ton of eco-friendly alternatives to everyday items.
Kristina is the owner of Green Envy and is proud to have mostly Canadian content in her store in order to help Canadian companies. If you’re looking for reusable straws, napkins, bamboo cutlery, shampoo and conditioner bars, zero waste toothpaste (tabs and refillable paste), and even bulk laundry or dish soap, she has it. I myself buy the bulk laundry soap and because it's more concentrated then other laundry detergent, it last so much longer and smells great. She also carries vegan and cruelty-free products like bags and make-up. By shopping at Green Envy, not only will you be helping a local business and reducing your waste, you will feel amazing for doing some good for our planet. Green Envy is situated in the heart of Ole Riverside but until you can visit Kristina in store, she is doing contactless curbside pick up and delivery for certain days. Follow Green Envy on Instagram and Facebook to keep up to date with delivery dates and new product.
Emerson Supply Co. is another store to look into if your looking for items to help your eco-friendly and sustainable jouney. When reading the story behind the store, Dan, owner of Emerson Supply Co writes that they wanted to provide items that would be useful, make life easier and are made with the highest quality to last longer. Dan also wants the items in his store to make as little impact on our earth as possible in production and waste. He carries kitchen and laundry items, personal care, cleaning products, and even things for the kiddos. If you are looking for natural, high quality, and reusable items, you’ll find them at Emerson Supply Co as they will be open during lockdown. Plus, a bonus to visiting such a great store is the cute pups that go to work with their dad. You can see the two fur babies here and it will very much make your day.
Wolf and Rebel is owned by Annie and she opened up during the pandemic. Although we can't go in store at the moment, this is one you have to go to when lock down is lifted. I visited the store the weekend she opened and it is adorable! The colours brighten your mood the second you walk in and there are so many different things for all different hobbies and interests. From eco-friendly products, to tarot cards, self-help books, pet items, things for the kids, beauty products and to top it off, vegan goodies! She also has other small local businesses selling their items in her store. She is doing curbside pick up and shipping for certain items. Check out her social media and website ..
Another store that opened up during the pandemic is Aggregate on Ottawa Street. This store is owned by Eryn from BeeKeeper Food Wraps (which are incredible btw) and Janet from Bubble Gums Ltd. that makes amazing and safe products for the most precious little ones. I also visited this store the weekend it opened and I had a hard time choosing what to buy first. They sell products from businesses owners who are as passionate and driven as they are. From plant stakes and necklaces by Lady Bug Landing Glass, beeswax candles by Lady Green, handmade pottery from Four Eleven Pottery, clothing from The City Edit and so much more. They have a website you can visit and they are also offering delivery and curbside pick up. Go look for yourself (on their website and then in store once lockdown is over) and see what I am talking when I say that this is an amazing store with beautiful products.
The next business I am going to mention is Whiskey Jack Boutique. Again, we can't visit in store right now but they are in such a cute location on a small lane way right next to A Dog's Breakfast downtown They have many items including candles, jewelry from Alora Flora, cute stickers and pins, books, pottery, coffee beans from local roasters, bath products,, yummy goodies including postcard chocolate bars. Yes... postcard chocolate bars! They are a souvenir and gift shop that has products from Canadian business countrywide. This place should definitely be on your list to check out once lockdown is over with. Till then, they have a website you can shop 24/7 and they also offer curbside pick and delivery twice a week. Don't forget to follow them on social media to be up to date on all their products, new releases and updates.
The last two stores I am going to mention are Urban Art Market and The Local Maker. I could spend hours in Urban Art Market and constantly see new things. The same goes for their social media. There are so many different handmade products made from 40+ local makers. You can find pottery by River Rock Pottery, planners and journals by Pocket Squares , felted animals, knitted and crochet items, amazing smelling soaps by Sud Therapy, bath salts, wooden spoons, cutting board by Bent Art Accessories, leather wallets by Gallup Leather, and I could go on and on. You need to go on their social media and send them a message. Just be warned, your hand will cramp from making a wish list for yourself..
The Local Maker is situated in beautiful Kingsville right near Kings Bakeshop. The store is consisted of 100% local handmade items that are beyond amazing. Your eyes will feast upon hand crafted and painted pottery from G-Pots Pottery and Eyes to the Skies. Pet collars and toys from Bonzai Gifts. Beautiful jewelry from Livi + Jean Jewelry, children’s toys created by North Shore Quilting Co. wooden hanging art from This Rustic Home, loose leaf tea by Simon Steeps and the list goes on. I always find something new I love in this store. They will be doing virtual shopping through Facebook, Instagram or by calling in. They also will be doing curbside pickup.
If you visit any of these business online or, eventually, in store, I personally believe they will become one of your top favourite stores to shop in YQG just like they are mine. Stay safe!
